Cards for Pen Pals

Hello! There’s alot of doom and gloom about lately. Covid cases are on the rise. Let’s try and stay positive!

In a bid to connect with people to share some joy, Stampin’ Up! set up a group for Demonstrators around the world to send cards to each other and become pen pals. In 2020 sharing some joy by creating and sending a card amidst all this doom and gloom with Covid-19 is certainly a brilliant idea.

Have you heard of Product Medleys? They are products which include a stamp set, dies, patterned paper, ribbon, embellishment, pre-die cut images packaged in a box. It’s all coordinated so you can let your creativity run free!

I used the Boho Indigo Product Medley for my first round. My husband said why did you not make them all the same? I’ll share this latch card with you as I don’t want to ruin the surprise by revealing all the cards I made. Yes, they were all different, and it did consume a lot of my time. When you’ve nowhere to go, time is what you have and what better way to spend it than creating a little joy to send to someone thousands of miles away?

Front of Card with latch closed

This is the front of the card, with a piece (the latch) folded over and lies on the top of the shortened card front. I cut it so that the front is square, and all the layered pieces were cut a fraction smaller than the previous layer.

Card with latch open

When you lift the latch, it reveals the “background” for the vase which was attached to the latch. I stamped and die cut 3 of the largest vase from the stamp set, and a pair of the trio of flowers image. As you can see, the vases have the same profile so it could be adhered back to back sandwiched between the arm of the latch piece. The trio of flowers needed a bit of adjustment when adhered back to back in the least objectionable position. It wasn’t a true match, but as close as to near perfect.

I die cut a Whisper White largest stitched shape circle off set from the centre of the square but centred on the vase on the latch. To balance the circle which was veering to the right of the square, I added a length of ribbon. A third vase was adhered to the centre of the circle, taking care that it was hidden and aligned with the vase on the latch when it was closed.

There was a mixture of a pre-die cut gold foil leaf and a die cut one added to this vase. When the latch is closed, the leaves in the third vase creates the appearance of being in the vase stuck to the latch arm. I love it!

Here is the inside of the latch. I also adhered the same patterned paper here to coordinate with the front of the card.
