DIY Patterned Paper with Sweet Symmetry

There’s nothing more satisfying than creating your own DIY Patterned Paper with a stamp set of your choice like with Sweet Symmetry. You can choose your own colour palette and where you want to place your images on the paper too.

It was such fun making this random pattern and once I’d stamped, I embossed it with the Tasteful Textures embossing folder and it looked like fabric!

Technique

You’ll notice the the outer edges of the image is slightly darker than in the middle. You can achieve this in two ways. One is by using what is called a “rock and roll” technique. The stamp is mounted on an acrylic block. When you ink up the stamp in the normal way, the stamp is flush with the surface of the ink pad so that the entire stamp is inked. With the “rock and roll” technique, you need to stamp off on a scratch piece of paper before re-inking the stamp. When you re-ink the stamp, you up end the block so the middle of the stamp does not make contact with the ink pad and only the edge of the stamp does. To ink the entire edges of the stamp, you need to roll the block so that all the edge of the image is inked.

The second method requires two ink pads. One ink pad in a lighter colour, and the other in a darker shade. You also need sponge daubers. Ink up the stamp in the lighter colour, then pick up the darker ink with the sponge dauber and apply the darker ink around the edges of the stamp, and then stamp.

I used the latter, of course!

Inside card

A card would not be complete without a bit of stamping on the inside too. I only wanted to stamp on the bottom inch or so of the inside of the card. Simply place a piece of scratch paper ensuring the edge is parallel to the bottom of the card to mask the area you don’t want to stamp. Repeat stamping the pattern as on the front of the card.

Partially emboss the stamped bit and adhere a 1/4″ strip of card stock the same colour as your card base to hide any imperfections ( like embossing crooked – guilty as charged [winks] ) !
