Today I have a fun fold Kimono card with Crane of Fortune. This is part 1 of two Kimono type cards. Many years ago, I saw a sock monkey pyjama card which looked like a kimono on Dawn Olshefske’s blog. She’s an American Demonstrator and had so many requests on how to make it, she created a video tutorial to address it. It wasn’t until after I’d espied the Crane of Fortune in the January-June 2022 mini that inspired me to have a go as the Suite has an Oriental flavour.
The Japanese consider the Crane as symbols of longevity. In Chinese Mythology Cranes are also regarded as symbols of longevity as well as peace. In fact Cranes are the second most venerated feathered birds after the Phoenix. They are often featured in paintings, crockery and of course on fabric.
Dawn’s measurments were for the USA market. Consequently I made several attempts at getting the size right, the first was too big (one on the left), the middle was a tad too small but the one on the far right was just right.
In the first attempt, the card insert measures 3-1/4″ x 3-7/8″ which created the largest Kimono. When I discovered it was too large for a C6 envelop, I had to shrink this to 2-1/2″ which was too small. Then I had a light bulb moment. Why not make a mini tent card? By creating a mini tent card I would have additional space for stamping.
I added another stamp set “After the Storm”. Sadly, this stamp set is retiring. I stamped the clouds at the top, but it’s barely visible in the photo below.
I could then stamp the sentiment on the upper half of the mini tent card leaving the lower portion for addressing the recipient.

Imperial
- From a 6″ x 12″ piece of Symbols of Fortune Specialty DSP cut a piece at 8 ¾” x 5-7/8”. Long side on top, score 2-3/16”. Rotate c/s 180 o and lightly score opposite end at 2-3/16″. This is to help make the paper more bendy. Essentially it is a gatefold. To avoid gapping in the middle, burnish only one side. Bring the other gatefold panel to butt up to the first fold before burnishing your second gatefold.

- Drop cutting blade at 3/4″ and cut to the top.
