Sympathy card – Quiet Meadow. They are cards we don’t like to make because it brings sadness and sorrow of news of the loss of a loved one, a relative or a dear friend.
He was a friend we’d known in our youth for almost 5 decades and who attended our wedding during our stint in Hong Kong all those years ago. Sadly after a fall, he lost a long fought battle with Prostate Cancer. His wife was my Matron-of-Honour at our wedding. When I saw her name on the caller ID on the landline, I had this sinking feeling it would be bad news. It’s scary when your peer group passes. It makes you more aware that you’re now the oldest generation and your kids are approaching their half century!
I used the Quiet Meadow stamps and Meadow dies to make this card, but it will be retiring. The other favourite of mine is the Timeworn Type 3D embossing folder, this too is retiring. It’s not easy seeing your favourite items retire but it’s a necessary evil in order to make room for the new.
The card base is in Smoky Slate as is the ink. The original die for the label had looped ends, but I cut them off because it didn’t look right for a card which had sombre connotations.
Stamping off technique
You can see the splatter pattern behind the sentiment is lighter – this is achieved by a technique called “stamping off”. Once you ink up the stamp, the first time you stamp is not on the project itself, but on a scrap piece of paper. This is the first generation of stamping. The second generation is after having stamped off the project, you then stamp on the project itself but without re-inking the stamp so that it produces a lighter colour. You can do this multiple times – so third generation stamping will mean you stamp off the project twice on a scrap piece of paper before stamping on your project and so on.
