Welcome to December’s Fancy Fun Fold theme. I’ve chosen a floating square card which is really easy to do and I am using some new product which will be available in the new year. The product is part of the Floral Delight Suite Collection – Delightful Wishes Bundle and the springlike Floral Delight 12″ x 12″ (30.5 x 30.5 cm) Designer Series Papers and embellishments.

The Tech 4 Stampers is a monthly subscription group run by Louise Sims. She mentors and enables members to understand IT jargon and equips them with a fountain of Technical knowledge to build or manage their own websites. It takes the mystery out of “tech” and I’ve certainly grown in confidence thanks to her expertise, patience and guidance. Not only that, I’ve met and made new friends with my fellow “Techs” and love the camaraderie within the group.

How to make a square double Floating card

There are two floating panels in different sizes glued on top of one another on to a square card base. What makes it float are springs which are made from strips of card stock. The picture below on the left is the front view displayed upright and in the second, I lay it flat. I had to put extra layers on the inside of the card to balance the weight of the floating panels on the front. In the suite, there are tiny little bee trinkets which are so stinkin’ cute!

Cutting guide

  1. Card base Old Olive : 5 ½” x 11″ (14 cm x 28 cm)
  2. First Floating panel Old Olive : 3″ x 5 ½” (7.5 cm x 14 cm)
  3. Second Floating panel Old Olive : 2″ x 5 ½” (5 cm x 14 cm)

Floral Delight Designer Series Paper Mat Layers

  1. Card base mat layer pattern A : 5 ¼” x 5 ¼” (13.5 x 13.5 cm)
  2. First floating panel pattern B : 2 ¾” x 5 ¼” (7 cm x 13.5 cm)
  3. Second floating panel pattern C: 1 ¾” x 5 ¼” (4.5 cm x 13.5 cm)

Inside the card

Here’s the inside of the card shown in the first picture on the left. It was stamped with a two-step stamping method using the Delightful Wishes stamp set. You can see the spring attachments attached to the panels to make it “float” in the second picture. Incidentally, I added extra layers to the back inside of the card to counter-balance the weight of the floating panels on the front because if you stand the card up to display it will topple over without the extra layers.

  • First mat layer Daffodil Delight : 5 ¼” x 5 ¼” (13.5 cm x 13.5 cm)
  • Second mat layer Old Olive : 5 ⅛” x 5 ⅛” (13 cm x 13 cm)
  • Third mat layer Basic White : 5″ x 5″ (12.5 cm x 12.5 cm)
  • *Stamp the floral bit before adhering the DSP.
  • *Cut DSP strip : ¾” x 5″ (2 cm x 12.5 cm) and adhere toward the bottom of the Basic White layer.

How to create the floating mechanisms aka springs

You need 8 springs. Five for the first floating panel and three for the second floating panel.

  1. Tip and short cut : Old Olive – 8″ x 4″ (20 cm x 9 cm)
  2. On the short side and score a ½”, 1″, 1 ½”, 2 ½”, 3″, 3 ½” (1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm, 6 cm, 7 cm, 8 cm).
  3. Orient scored piece on the long side and cut them into 8 x 4″ x 1″ pieces (eight 9 cm x 2.5 cm pieces)
