Emboss resist technique – Fragrant Flowers Bundle

Have you ever tried the emboss resist technique? The Fragrant Flowers bundle in the January-April 2023 mini on page 21 has a sample from which I took my inspiration. After working with Christmas colours over the last 3 months, I quite fancied a change and the pastel shades really appealed to me.

If you purchase the Fragrant Flower Bundle during Sale-a-bration, you’ll be able to choose the Favored Flowers 12″x 12″ (30.5 x 30.5 cm) Designer Series Paper as your free product. As you know, during Sale-a-bration for every £45 purchase you place, you will get to choose a free stamp set or pretty papers listed in the brochure.

I used the emboss resist technique for this card. The Favored Flowers papers have a black background and was too dark, so I used the Dandy Designs 12″x 12″ (30.5 x 30.5 cm) Designer Series Papers instead. This is also free subject to a qualifying purchase of £90. This is HUGE – 48 sheets, 4 each of 12 double sided designs!

There is a double layer of vellum on my card because I didn’t want to hide the pretty pattern. The larger piece of vellum has a striped pattern, and there is a plain smaller piece of vellum card stock on top on which I gold embossed the word “hello”. I didn’t think the embossing would sit as well on patterned vellum, so added the plain vellum piece for embossing with.

Emboss resist technique

This technique entails stamping an image in Versamark ink then embossing it with embossing powder and a heat tool. When you want to add colour with water colouring mediums, the embossed areas will act as a barrier and resist colour. It is best to work with Shimmery White card stock or water colour paper as it tolerates getting wet better than ordinary Basic White card stock. If you over work an area of Basic White card stock with a paintbrush, it breaks down the paper and can cause a hole or tear.

  1. Choose a linear stamp to stamp on shimmery White card stock in Versamark ink.
  2. Sprinkle with white embossing powder and heat set.
  3. Wet your paper slightly, pick up some ink and apply to your embossed image.
  4. When you’re happy with the result, leave aside to dry before adhering to your card.

Inside card

There is a die in the Fragrant Flowers die set which simply embosses. I used this to decorate the inside of the card and used the new smaller size blending brush to add some colour in Petal Pink to make the embossed area more visible.
